Undated portrait of film actor Kirk Douglas. Douglas born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, made his Broadway debut in 1941, served in the US Navy and embarked on a screen career in 1946. His films include Champion (1949), The bad and the Beautiful (1952), Lust for Life (1956) for which he was nominated at the US Academy awards, and Spartacus (1960). From the 1970s Douglas also worked as director. Douglas won an honorary Oscar in 1996 for 50 years as a creative and moral force in the motion picture community. Kirk Douglas wurde in einem New Yorker Ghetto als Sohn russisch-jüdischer Einwanderer geboren. Durch harte Arbeit, sein gutes Aussehen und Talent wurde er zum Hollywoodstar. Er spielte einige Jahre am Broadway bevor er 1946 sein Leinwanddebüt in ‚Die seltsame Liebe der Martha Ivers‘ gab. Für seine Rolle in ‚Zwischen Frauen und Seilen‘ (1949) erhielt er seine erste Oscar-Nominierung und glänzte unter der Regie von Stanley Kubrick in dem Antikriegsdrama ‚Wege zum Ruhm‘ (1957) und dem Historienfilm ‚Spartacus‘ (1960). 1996 wurde Kirk Douglas mit einem Oscar für sein Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet.
